What is inside

Notes, examples and past papers in one book

Most students work from a textbook, a separate question bank, a folder of past papers and their own notes. This book puts all four together, in the order the course is taught.

  • Written to be used in class

The book follows the order the course is taught in, so you can work through the explanation as it happens rather than copying it down and making sense of it later.

  • Worked examples, then practice

Every topic opens with examples worked through in full, followed by practice questions that build from the straightforward to the kind the examiners actually set.

  • Past papers sorted by topic

Cambridge 9709 questions are grouped under the topic they test, so you can practise integration by parts the week you learn it instead of waiting for a whole paper.

  • Homework built in

Each topic ends with a set of homework questions, so what you do between classes is already chosen and already in front of you.

  • Two volumes, one syllabus

P3 is split where the syllabus splits, at the end of integration, so each volume stays a manageable size and you always know where you are in the course.

What you receive

Everything for P3, in two volumes

Learn it, practise it, master it, from one book.

  • Two printed volumes covering the full P3 syllabus
  • Structured notes for every topic
  • Worked examples before each practice set
  • Topical Cambridge 9709 past paper questions
  • Homework questions at the end of every topic
  • Space to work through problems in the book itself

What is covered

What each volume covers

2 volumes covering all 9 syllabus topics, in the order Cambridge sets them out. Each volume carries its own notes, worked examples, topical past paper questions and homework.

Volume 1

Algebra, functions and calculus

The techniques the rest of the paper is built on, from partial fractions and logarithms through to integration by parts.

  1. Algebra

The modulus function and its graphs, dividing polynomials, the factor and remainder theorems, partial fractions, and the binomial expansion of (1 + x) to the power n for rational n.

  2. Logarithmic and exponential functions

Exponentials and logarithms as inverses of each other, the laws of logarithms, solving equations and inequalities involving them, and reducing a relationship to linear form.

  3. Trigonometry

Secant, cosecant and cotangent with the identities that come with them, the compound and double angle formulae, and expressing a sin θ + b cos θ as a single sine or cosine term.

  4. Differentiation

Differentiating exponentials, logarithms and trigonometric functions, the product and quotient rules, and implicit and parametric differentiation.

  5. Integration

The standard exponential, logarithmic and trigonometric integrals, integration by substitution and by parts, integrating with partial fractions, and the trapezium rule.

Volume 2

Vectors, complex numbers and differential equations

The second half, where the calculus from Volume 1 is put to work and two new pieces of mathematics are introduced.

  1. Numerical solution of equations

Locating a root by a change of sign, iterative formulae of the form x = F(x), and showing whether an iteration converges to the root you are after.

  2. Vectors

Vectors in two and three dimensions, magnitude and unit vectors, the scalar product and the angle between two vectors, and the vector equation of a line, including parallel, intersecting and skew lines.

  3. Differential equations

Forming a differential equation from a rate of change, solving first order equations by separating the variables, including those that need partial fractions, and finding the particular solution from a given condition.

  4. Complex numbers

Real and imaginary parts, conjugates and the four operations, roots of polynomial equations, the Argand diagram, modulus and argument form, and loci.
